From Contract to Switch-On: How Long Solar Installation Actually Takes

Installation day takes one or two days. Everything around it takes two to four months — here's the honest calendar: design and engineering, the permit wait, the crew day, inspection, and the utility's permission-to-operate letter, plus what stalls each stage and how to keep yours moving.

The number nobody says upfront

Solar sales conversations glow about installation day — “we'll have you done in a day!” — and it's true, and it's also the least of it: the honest span from signed contract to a system legally producing power runs two to four months in most of the country. None of that is scandal; it's process. But knowing WHERE the weeks go turns waiting into monitoring — and a few early questions can pull whole weeks out of your calendar.

Stage 1: design and engineering (2–4 weeks)

After signing, your project goes to the drawing board literally: a site survey (increasingly by drone and satellite), structural review of your roof, electrical design, and the stamped plans your town will demand. This stage moves fast when your system sizing was settled honestly during quoting — and stalls when change orders reopen the design. One hidden fork here: if your main electrical panel needs an upgrade (common in older homes), you want that discovered NOW, priced NOW, and permitted together — late panel-upgrade surprises are the classic mid-project stall.

Stage 2: the permit wait (2–8 weeks — the big variable)

Your stamped plans go to the local building department, and here the calendar leaves your installer's hands: some jurisdictions turn permits in days (a growing number use instant online approval), others take two months for the same paperwork. Add HOA architectural review where applicable — a parallel clock worth starting the day you sign. The question that predicts this stage: ask every quoting installer “what's the actual permit turnaround in my town lately?” — installers who work your jurisdiction weekly know the desk, the quirks, and the shortcuts; installers who don't are learning on your project (a red flag with a clipboard).

Stage 3: installation day(s) (1–2 days, the famous part)

Racking, panels, inverter, wiring — a practiced crew handles a typical residential system in a day, two for complex roofs or battery additions. Your driveway hosts a truck, your wifi gets a monitoring gateway, and by dinner the roof looks finished. It isn't — legally speaking — which brings the stage nobody warns you about…

Stage 4: inspection and PTO (2–6 weeks, the patience tax)

Two gates remain: the local inspection (the town verifying the build matches the stamped plans) and the utility's Permission to Operate — interconnection approval, often a meter swap, then the PTO letter that makes flipping the switch legal. Utility queues vary by territory and season; your installer files the paperwork, but the utility owns the clock. The discipline: don't run the system before PTO (it can breach your interconnection agreement), and do ask your installer for weekly status — squeaky projects move. The day the letter lands, the switch flips, and net metering starts crediting from kilowatt one.

Keeping YOUR project on the fast side

Five levers, all yours: choose jurisdiction experience (the single biggest timeline predictor); settle design decisions before signing — change orders reset clocks; fire the HOA paperwork immediately; respond same-day to every document request (idle files sink in queues); and schedule off-peak when you can — spring signings beat the post–summer-bill rush.
