Solar panels in Colorado

Colorado has 300+ sun days per year, 5–6 peak sun hours on the Front Range, Xcel Energy net metering, and no state income credit — but the sun is the incentive. Here are 15 city guides.

Net metering
Main incentive
~$0.15–$0.17/kWh
Utility rate
7–10 yrs
Typical payback
5.0–6.0 hrs
Daily peak sun

Colorado is one of the best solar-producing states in the country. The Front Range — Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs — receives 5.0 to 6.0 peak sun hours daily, producing more kilowatt-hours per dollar of installed solar than any northeastern state. Xcel Energy, which serves the majority of Colorado’s population, offers full retail-rate net metering. Colorado does not have a state income tax credit for residential solar, but with the highest sun resource east of the Rockies, the financial case is compelling without one.
