Maine does not have a state income tax credit for residential solar. We say that up front because it is the most important fact for a Maine homeowner evaluating solar in 2026, and some solar salespeople prefer not to mention it. What Maine does have: full retail-rate net metering through Central Maine Power (southern and central ME) and Versant Power (northern and eastern ME), a sales tax exemption on solar equipment, a property tax exemption on solar-added value, and a competitive installer market particularly in the Portland region. For homeowners with a well-sited roof and a long-term horizon, Maine solar works — just with realistic expectations about the 8 to 12 year payback window.
